Middlesbrough returned to the top of the Championship with a well-earned 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town at the Riverside Stadium.

After their first league defeat of the season at Portsmouth, Rob Edwards’ side bounced back with a strong display.

Cedric Kipré’s own goal on the stroke of half-time put Boro ahead, and Morgan Whittaker doubled the lead ten minutes after the restart, reacting quickest after Alex Palmer’s parry.

The visitors pulled one back through Dara O’Shea’s header from a corner, setting up a nervy finale, but the hosts held firm to claim the points.

Sol Brynn’s first-half penalty save from George Hirst proved crucial, while Boro also wasted chances to extend their lead. In the end, though, their resilience told, sealing a statement win and a swift return to the summit.
