As Borussia Dortmund head to Freiburg for a highly intriguing Sunday Bundesliga fixture, Nico Kovac’s BVB look to be without four injured and two suspended players. As is common practice prior to Dortmund away fixtures, the local Ruhr Nachrichten newspaper keeps careful tabs on which players have made the trip. RN reports that – in addition to injured centre-backs Waldemar Anton and Aarón Anselmino – attacker Julian Brandt and Marcel Sabitzer are also missing.
Kicker now reports that young talents Julien Duranville and Cole Campbell have been left behind for disciplinary reasons. Duranville has been working his way back from summer shoulder surgery. After two appearances for BVB II in the 3. Liga, the 19-year-old twice-capped Belgian international has made Kovac’s last three matchday squads, yet remained unused off the bench. Duranville was evidently late for Saturday’s closing training session.
Campbell last saw action as a substitute against Heidenheim on matchday three and hasn’t made a Bundesliga matchday squad since matchday four. Like Duranville, Campbell made Kovac’s last two Champions League squads but never set foot on the pitch. Both players are being linked with moves away from Dortmund in the coming January transfer window.
Kicker claims that the talented young duo simply aren’t living up to the high expectations Kovac has set for them. Duranville, as noted above, has already been capped twice at senior level for Belgium and maintains an estimated market value of €8.5m. Campbell is a €5m-valued player and seemed destined to break into the first team this year following solid performances for BVB II last season.
It nevertheless appears as if Campbell simply can’t reconcile himself to a bench role after seeing a summer transfer away from the club fall through. A taker for him in January could be found. Duranville could potentially be on his way to joining a fellow former Dortmund player accused of not working hard enough in training, USMNT international Giovanni Reyna, at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
