Botafogo face the threat of another transfer ban, with a Monday 16 March deadline to pay Atlanta United following a 3-0 defeat by Flamengo.
Flamengo dominated the first half, Samuel Lino scored on 13 minutes and Léo Pereira struck a free-kick at 47, before Barboza was sent off for a foul on Pedro. Four minutes after the break Pedro added the third from Varela’s pass, with Leonardo Jardim’s side then in control. According to GE, Botafogo do not have the funds to meet the five million dollar instalment.
The payment concerns the second instalment for Thiago Almada, signed from Atlanta United in 2024, and is about R$ 26.3 million. If it is missed, Atlanta United would notify FIFA and the club would face a new ban on registering players.
FIFA imposed a transfer ban on the final day of 2025 after Botafogo failed to pay the first instalment of 10 million dollars, roughly R$ 52.6 million. The sanction was lifted in February once the club settled the amount.
Flamengo’s next match is against Remo at the Maracanã on Thursday 19 at 20:00 Brasília time, in the seventh round of the Brasileirão.
