Manuel Botubot has challenged Poli Rincón's version of their flashpoint at Luis Casanova in October 1980. According to Superdeporte, the former Valencia defender responded after the ex Real Madrid and Betis striker revisited the incident on air.
The clash came on matchday seven of the 1980/81 season, when Valencia hosted Real Madrid. Rincón had left Betis to join Madrid, and Real Sociedad would go on to win the first of two consecutive titles. Valencia won the Mestalla game with two goals from Mario Alberto Kempes.
Rincón, speaking in a jocular, boastful tone, recounted that Botubot had been roughing up Pineda, that he came on already fired up, twice had a hand put in his face, then struck Botubot, splitting his lips and knocking out a tooth. He said the assistant told the referee Botubot hit him first so both were sent off, and he claimed Madrid won 0-1 and took the points, adding that they carried the league home.
Botubot later responded that dressing up such episodes as jokes is misplaced and that what happens on the pitch should stay there. He added that events did not happen the way Rincón tells them.
Valencia supporters quickly identified the match and highlighted the inaccuracies in Rincón’s story. They noted that his claim of a 0-1 win for Madrid does not tally with the result.
