Bourg-en-Bresse, operating on one of National’s smallest budgets, host OM in the Coupe de France on Sunday at 14:45, with 6,000 spectators expected.
According to L'Équipe, president Gilles Garnier has overseen the club from its amateur years up to Ligue 2, then back to N2 two years ago, and the club have repeatedly only just passed the DNCG.
In a city shaped by basketball and a deep rugby culture, football has often relied on the Coupe de France to broaden its support.
The club, long linked with Péronnas in football, remember eliminating FC Metz and Robert Pirès 2-0 before losing the 1998 quarter-final 1-0 to OL at Gerland.
Garnier has spoken of fighting to avoid bankruptcy and of persuading people who care about the club, noting that even restarting in N2 was complicated. He is glad the club can breathe again, yet says he would not repeat it because it is too hard.
