Columbus Crew have confirmed the signing of Brais Méndez as a Designated Player, unveiling him at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field to a surge of excitement and immediate calls for his debut in MLS.
The first images showed the Galician midfielder on the pitch with a club scarf around his neck, underlining the status with which he arrives in Ohio. The presentation swiftly moved the anticipation from boardroom to grass.
Online reaction was instant. Real Sociedad supporters mixed farewells with pleas to look after him, while some lamented not seeing him again in San Sebastián. Crew fans urged that he be in the team straight away and said they could not wait to watch him.
After a long transatlantic flight, Méndez introduced himself to Columbus fans in a short video recorded on landing, noting he had arrived that day, was very happy and would see them soon. Hours later, he greeted the stands from the turf.
The move, valued at 6 million euros, closes four seasons at Zubieta. Méndez departs La Real with 33 goals and 24 assists from 166 appearances.
Having personally visited to bid farewell to former team-mates, he now begins his American chapter as a key piece in the Ohio club’s project.
