Brazil face Haiti this Friday in the Copa's second round

Brazil will face Haiti in the second round of the World Cup this Friday (19) at 9:30 p.m. Brasília time at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, United States. After a 1-1 draw with Morocco in their opener, the team coached by Carlo Ancelotti is aiming for its first win of the tournament.

To secure the three points, the coach explained in a press conference on Thursday (18) that he intends to “improve the quality of play, have more balance, and apply pressure at the right moments.” Center back Gabriel Magalhães also highlighted the difficulty of the match.

“Every game is difficult, no matter who you’re playing against. On the field it’s 11 against 11, there are no easy games. We know we have to be fully focused tomorrow and come out very strong, because it’s going to be a difficult match. We talked a lot about the last game; tomorrow is a game that requires attention. They have a team that is very physically strong, and we worked very hard to put in a great performance,” said the defender.

Of the 26 called up, only Neymar did not travel with the delegation to Philadelphia. He remained in New Jersey to optimize the final phase of his recovery from a right calf injury.

The first match took place 30 years earlier, on April 21, 1974. In a friendly at Hélio Prates da Silveira Stadium, now called Arena BRB Mané Garrincha, the Seleção crushed the Haitians 4-0. Paulo Cézar Caju, Rivellino, Marinho Chagas, and Edu found the net.

Haiti in its 2nd World Cup

Ranked 85th in the FIFA Men’s World Ranking, the Caribbean side is playing in the World Cup for only the second time. Its first and only previous appearance came 52 years ago, in the 1974 edition. At the tournament held in Germany, they were defeated in all three matches: Haiti 1-3 Italy, Haiti 0-7 Poland, and Haiti 1-4 Argentina.

Haiti is coming off a 1-0 defeat to Scotland in the opening round.
