Nicolas Otamendi veteran Argentine defender confirmed that he'll retire from international football after the 2026 FIFA World cup.

The announcement came after Argentina finished South American qualifying with 1 - 0 loss to Ecuador .. a match in which Lionel Messi was absent & Otamendi received red card.

Reflecting on His Career

Otamendi stated:

"Every time I wore the Argentina shirt, I gave my all. The Qatar World cup remains the greatest achievement of my career. Memories of celebrating with my teammates will stay with me forever"

He also shared his journey to the top:

"I fought to play at the highest level and my family taught me that life requires effort. You must always fight to give your best and what doesn’t happen today, you try to achieve tomorrow"

Future Plans

Currently at Benfica, Otamendi hinted that his next move after the World cup's uncertain:

"I've one more year on my contract. After the World cup, I'll decide whether to return to Argentina or continue elsewhere"

He also paid emotional tribute to his mother and family for their sacrifices:

"My mother always supported me, preparing meals, waiting for me at the bus and making everything possible for me to pursue my dream. I will always be grateful to her"..
