After breaking the club record for the longest unbeaten streak with ten games, NJ/NY Gotham FC will begin September at the top of the table. The first-place side has a five-point cushion for the NWSL Shield after they shared the points with Portland Thorns FC over the weekend. The 13-3-6 record has brought fans joy, and the hope is that they will continue their current run for the rest of the 2026 campaign.
Gotham FC would also like to return to winning ways after the Bats have played to a draw in their last two matches. Sure, the unbeaten run remains alive. But they need to score a few more goals in the upcoming fixtures to ensure they take home all three points. Truthfully, the Bats are not even close to running away with the Shield, and all it would take is a few draws and a loss to fall into second or third place.
With three of the four games against teams out of a playoff spot, here is a look at Gotham FC's schedule for the month of September.
Gotham FC might be the top team in the NWSL, but they had a tough start to the season. During that rough patch, they lost at home to expansion team Denver Summit FC. As such, the NJ/NY side will want to return the favor and beat Denver on the road. It will not be easy, as the home side is in tenth place with a 7-8-6 record, which is not bad for a first-year team. Plus, their confidence will be high after scoring six goals in their last match. Gotham needs to be careful with this one.
September 11 is usually a somber day, especially for those in the New York City tri-state area. It is nice that Gotham will be playing on the 25th anniversary, but it is a shame this is not a home match. Nevertheless, the Bats still have to play against Racing Louisville FC. The team had a decent August, winning their first four matches and losing the last two. The visitors have had some tough results in Kentucky, so they will need to be defensively perfect.
Like the Denver home game, the Bats' home match with the North Carolina Courage was during the rough patch at the beginning of the season. The game ended in a scoreless draw. So, Gotham will aim to get the three points this time. However, the Courage is the one team in a playoff spot that the visitors will face. With Golden Boot leader Ashley Sanchez highlighting a talented attack, this will be a difficult matchup.
The last game will see the NJ/NY side return home to play against Chicago Stars FC. In the last meeting, the Bats beat the Stars in a convincing 2-0 fashion. Ideally, Gotham FC will get the 2026 sweep. More importantly, it would be great if the team is in first place by the end of the month.
