Ruben Amorim has been sacked as Manchester United head coach after just 18 months in charge.
The decision comes less than 24 hours after United were held to a 1–1 draw by Leeds United at Elland Road.
Amorim’s dismissal follows an explosive post-match press conference in which he publicly challenged the club’s hierarchy, urging the board to allow him to work without interference and alluding to serious issues behind the scenes.
The former Sporting CP boss was appointed in November 2024, arriving at Old Trafford as one of Europe’s most highly regarded young coaches following an impressive spell in Portugal.
His trademark three-at-the-back system delivered sustained success at Sporting, but it failed to take hold at Manchester United and remained a point of contention throughout his tenure.
There were notable highs, including eye-catching victories over Manchester City and Liverpool, but they were too often followed by poor home form and a series of underwhelming – at times embarrassing – performances.
The most damaging result came earlier this season with a shock Carabao Cup second-round exit to Grimsby Town. A difficult festive period, which saw points dropped against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds United, proved to be the final straw for the club’s hierarchy.
United had been 13th in the Premier League before Amorim’s arrival, and while there were signs of progress – most notably a run to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao last May – it was ultimately deemed insufficient.
Amorim was under contract until June 2027, with the option of a further year. During his spell in charge, Manchester United won 23 matches across all competitions.
The club has confirmed that former midfielder and current Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher will take interim charge of the first team, starting with Wednesday’s Premier League fixture against Burnley.
In a statement, the club said:
“Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United. “Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May. “With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish. “The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future. “Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
Fletcher will remain in interim charge while United searches for a permanent replacement.
Several high-profile names are already being linked with the vacancy, including Oliver Glasner, Gareth Southgate, Mauricio Pochettino, Andoni Iraola, Xavi, and Zinedine Zidane.
