Brenden Aaronson has been named in the United States squad for this summer’s home World Cup. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, national team boss Mauricio Pochettino confirmed a 26-man list on Tuesday evening that includes the Leeds United midfielder.

The 25-year-old’s call-up follows a much-improved club campaign in which he helped Leeds avoid relegation. He recorded four goals and five assists in 37 Premier League appearances as Leeds finished 14th, eight points clear of relegated West Ham. Only top-scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin had more direct goal contributions, with Swiss forward Noah Okafor level on nine.

The USA are among three co-hosts alongside Canada and Mexico. Pochettino’s side are in Group D, opening against Paraguay in Los Angeles on June 13, then meeting Australia in Seattle six days later before facing Türkiye back in Los Angeles on June 26. They will hope to at least match their last-16 finish in Qatar in 2022.

After Leeds’ final-day defeat at West Ham, Aaronson said he would be super excited if he could go, calling it a dream for him and his family to be at the games and to represent his country on home soil, something he would never forget.

Aaronson will link up again with former Leeds team-mates Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie in the USA camp. He and Adams are among five Premier League players selected, alongside Crystal Palace’s Chris Richards, Antonee Robinson of Fulham and newly-promoted Coventry City striker Haji Wright, while Celtic title-winner Auston Trusty is also involved.
