According to Diario Vasco, the past and present of Real Sociedad came together on Sunday at the Aston Villa Training Ground. Roberto Olabe, now Aston Villa’s director of football, hosted Erik Bretos and members of the txuri-urdin expedition before the first team trained under Matarazzo. With a €400 million budget, Villa are the reigning Europa League champions, a competition Real will return to.

After the tour, Olabe and Bretos moved pitchside to observe the session closely. On the adjacent field was another familiar face, Natalia Arroyo, Aston Villa Women’s coach, who enjoyed strong seasons at Zubieta. Matarazzo’s workout was lengthy, with an emphasis on tactics and building from the back.

When training finished, players made their way over to greet Olabe. He expressed how pleased he was to see everyone and told Soler he was finally seeing him in Real colours after trying to sign him for several seasons. Zubeldia, Aihen, Turrientes, Marrero and Remiro were among those to stop by.

True to habit, Bretos kept a close eye on his phone as the transfer window moves on. He has yet to make an addition while shaping a squad that must compete in four competitions. Real are targeting a centre-back and an attacker, and could bolster other areas if the market offers value.

Outgoings remain active, with several names under consideration. Karrikaburu will be the next to depart, while Matarazzo still has decisions to make at left-back and in one or two other positions.
