Brighton fans have been reacting to new reports that Newcastle United are trying to sign Joao Pedro.
It was widely reported that Newcastle were trying to sign the then 20 year old back in summer 2022.
However, Joao Pedro ended up staying at Watford and left a year later for £30m to join Brighton.
I think in situations like this, when Newcastle United are claimed to be trying to sign a player, the best way of finding out how good the player is (or isn’t…), is by looking at what his current club’s fans think about him…
We have already covered what Burnley fans have said about Newcastle trying to sign James Trafford, the same with Nottingham Forest fans and Anthony Elanga. So it is only right we also go with Joao Pedro and the Seagulls fans….
Brighton fans commenting via their North Stand Chat message board on Newcastle United trying to buy Joao Pedro:
‘The club will take the line that they look forward to having him back next season, knowing full well that he is determined to get away to a new club.
This means Pedro can’t then hang on for a mega contract from possible buyers and will need to adjust his demands.
But potential buyers will still need to pay a decent fee to the Albion to sign him.
Basically he will only move on our terms.’
‘Desperately hoping he stays but if he goes, I think Newcastle are most likely.
They can afford him and the wages. They wanted him before. They’re in the Champions League. They need someone to replace/back up/play alongside Isak as Callum Wilson is going.’
‘Newcastle for £60m+.’
‘If selling him fits our model and ticks a box this summer but allows us to keep Mitoma, Baleba and JPVH I really don’t care where he goes.
60m + also goes someway to covering the much needed defensive recruitments.
Win, win.’
‘I do not rate Pedro, I’m sure we can get £50/60m but for me he’s too lazy and is too easy to wind up, his temperament just isn’t at an elite level.
I’m a massive Liverpool fan but with BHA running in my veins, most clubs in the PL look to Brighton for the unexpected diamonds.’
‘Agree with most of this, including Joao Pedro’s temperament but not that he is lazy. His work rate on and off the ball is impressive, and keeps on going until the bitter end — on many occasions, he’s bust a gut to get back and defend as games draw to a close.’
‘No chance he’s lazy. Literally tried to carry the team by himself in some games, often to his detriment really as he’d appear everywhere trying to do everything but not be available in the middle when chances arrive.’
‘A general feeling that he’s going, just that. So, if that’s what is going to happen, OK, shrug shoulders and get on with it.’
‘Did the stadium tour today. Home dressing room – no Pedro seat or shirt. Bit of a disappointment for the girl from Sao Paulo who was on the tour. He’s gone!’
‘Truth is, he’s a great player.
Cons: Became a little petulant as the season wore on. Goes down a little easier than you’d like. Doesn’t score as many goals as you’d expect a player of his ability would.
Pros: Pretty much everything else. Great workrate Fantastic feet super vision terrific movement top class link up play can create something from nothing positionally fluid incredible penalty taker
I’ll be sad to see him go, if he does.’
‘I don’t think we should sell to Newcastle for any price because they are a direct rival.’
‘I don’t get why the general feeling in our fanbase seems to be happy to get shot of him. I think he’s class, and he’s got us out of a hole many times. I will be very sad to see him go. He’s a brilliant player.’
‘I’ve read he’s not even that good on here!’
‘In all honesty, I suspect it’s an element of self-protection against his seemingly inevitable departure. There was a time earlier this season when I genuinely thought he was totally unplayable: quick, powerful, motivated and direct, with an eye for a killer pass. He’s a phenomenal talent with room to improve. I don’t think any of us want that version of the player gone.
However, if (and it’s an unsubstantiated “if”) he doesn’t want to be here, and we can’t/won’t convince him to stay, then yes, I do want him gone, and for a tasty transfer fee.’
‘The prospect of a midfield of Tonali, Guimaraes and Joao Pedro (with Joelinton as another option) would be best avoided.’
‘If the barcodes want JP, that can only mean they’re preparing to lose Isak.’
‘Or it could mean they are beefing up their squad for the expanded European competitions?’
‘He is a forward, not a striker. He can play No.9, No.10 and on the wing and do things that Isak can’t in terms of playing the No.10 position. I’m talking passing and build up play.
