Bruno Fernandes has addressed whether Portugal are stronger without Cristiano Ronaldo, saying the team must adapt to benefit from the striker’s qualities.
"I have no problem talking about it. I know what people think, that it's clear we play better without Ronaldo, that the players are freer and more fluid." He told Canal 11.
"If that happens, it's partly our fault. We can't let Cristiano be the only one holding us back. He can give us things inside the box, he's a very high-level player, he draws defenders and creates space for other players."
Portugal manager Roberto Martinez backed the importance of his captain, saying: "We are better with Ronaldo, Nuno Mendes and Pedro Neto."
Ronaldo, now 40, has been prolific for Al-Nassr and Portugal, scoring five in five World Cup 2026 qualifiers. He was sent off for elbowing Dara O’Shea in a defeat by the Republic of Ireland, and Portugal beat Armenia 9-1 without him.
"Definitely, yes, because I will be 41 years old. I feel very good in this moment. I score goals, I still feel quick and sharp, I'm enjoying my game in the national team," he told CNN when asked if 2026 would be his final World Cup.
FIFA handed him a three-match ban for the red card, with two games deferred for a one-year probation, leaving him available for the group stage if selected. Portugal are set to face Uzbekistan, Colombia and the winner of the inter-confederation play-offs featuring New Caledonia, Jamaica and DR Congo.
