Bruno Fernandes: Man United players wax lyrical over their captain | OneFootball

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes celebrated his 100th goal for the club at the weekend against Chelsea.

Five successful years

The Portuguese star arrived to United in 2020 from Sporting Lisbon and was an instant hit.

He has been an integral member of the team for years and was made club captain in 2023 by former manager Erik ten Hag.

What the United players think of him

To mark the achievement, the club’s official website asked players at Carrington what has been their favourite Bruno Fernandes moment since they have been at the club.

Goal against Arsenal

The most popular choice was Fernandes’ stunning free kick against Arsenal last March.

Joshua Zirkzee, Ayden Heaven and Patrick Dorgu all highlighted the goal as their personal favourite. Zirkzee claimed, “the free kick against Arsenal was my favourite one. Just because I knew that it was going in.”

Liverpool long range strike

Fernandes also scored a belter at home against Liverpool in April 2024 when he rifled the ball from the halfway line into the back of the net in front of the Stretford End.

Kobbie Mainoo pinpointed this moment, as did Amad who chose a few moments. The Ivorian explained, “the hat-trick against Real Sociedad, the goal against Liverpool at home. So many great ones but if I had to pick a moment, it would be a lifting a trophy is very special for him.”

Leadership qualities

Some members of the squad chose to focus not so much on his wonderful abilities with a football but more the qualities he brings as a captain.

Academy keeper Dermot Mee told the story of when he was 18, “the first time that I went up and trained with him, he gave me a bet that if I could save two out of his five shots, he would give me a signed shirt. I didn’t do it, but he went and got me one anyway and sorted me.”

The club’s newest recruit, Senne Lammens, added that “the first moment I met him, he made me feel welcome at the club. Coming from your captain, yeah, it’s a nice feeling.”

Another summer signing Matheus Cunha also claimed that he offered him help as soon as he arrived to Old Trafford and that “I think he’s a great captain.”

Other moments

Matthijs de Ligt claimed that his favourite moment was the skipper’s latest strike against Chelsea while Maguire stated that his favourite moment was when Fernandes provided an inch perfect corner back in 2020 when the defender headed in his first Premier League goal for the club.

Manuel Ugarte interestingly pinpointed his captain’s performance against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup last season while Tom Heaton went down the humorous route, claiming that his favourite Bruno moment was seeing him perform a Lewis Capaldi song last weekend.
