Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes scored his 100th goal for the club against Chelsea at the weekend, after which he promised to remain true to himself in his approach on the field.
Fernandes has been an undoubted success with a dysfunctional United since moving to Old Trafford from Sporting for €55m in January 2020. His century of goals arrived on his 296th appearance for United, who secured a confidence-boosting victory over the Blues on Saturday.
The emotional and sometimes dramatic way the Portuguese conducts himself on the field has made him a firm favourite with the United fans, while outside scrutiny sometimes leads to criticism of his approach. When speaking to the club’s in-house media platforms after the Chelsea win, Fernandes said he wants to stay connected to his true self on the field.
“It’s a big moment for me, reaching that milestone for a massive club so I’m very happy, I won’t hide from that,” he said. “It’s not something I was trying to achieve when I came to the club, I just wanted to do the best I could, and if I can get more goals to help the team win games then that’s what matters most.”
“it’s not something I aimed for. I just want to enjoy playing football. I enjoy so much being out there. Even the frustration I have on the pitch, I enjoy that. That’s me being me. I won’t ever change. I know that I need to deal with everyone in a different way, but I need to feel that Bruno back, because that was the Bruno who played on the street with his friends and cousins. This is the same Bruno. I want to win games and be happy, giving good moments not just for me but for me teammates, my family, the fans, to get days like this and wins like that.”
We need to win big things for Bruno - Amorim
United’s Portuguese boss Ruben Amorim added his voice to those praising Bruno, telling United’s media: “We need to build a team to win big things, because that guy deserves to be in the history of our club, not just for what he’s done but what his team conquers.”
With his next goal, Bruno will go level on 101 goals with Sandy Turnball, who is currently the 20th highest-scoring player in the club’s history. A position he will surely relinquish to Fernandes in the near future.
