Bruno Lage pays tribute to Pizzi, his top scorer | OneFootball

Bruno Lage has paid tribute to Pizzi in a social media message, describing him as the player who scored the most goals under his management.

According to Glorioso 1904, the note followed a Portuguese Football Federation tribute to the midfielder on Monday. Lage did not attend the ceremony, but he marked the occasion publicly.

The Setúbal-born coach, who led Pizzi at Benfica from January 2019 to June 2020 and won the 18/19 Liga title with him, said he could not let the moment pass without recognition.

He stressed that coaches must build the right collective framework to bring out individuals, praising Pizzi’s understanding of positioning and play between the lines, plus his creativity, assists and goals.

Lage also noted the challenges of the Covid-19 affected 2019/20 season and highlighted the midfielder’s output across consecutive campaigns. Between January 2019 and the league restart after the pandemic stoppage, Pizzi scored 38 goals under him, the highest tally by any player in Lage’s coaching career.
