Interim coach Bruno Lazaroni put Vascos crisis down to the loss of key figures after the 2-1 defeat to Santos at Vila Belmiro on Thursday. According to PaponaColina, the result left the club bottom of the Brasileiro. He said the instability reflects a sweeping rebuild that removed last seasons main reference points and leading scorers.
Lazaroni argued that Vasco produced enough to take more, claiming they outperformed Santos in overall numbers but lacked cutting edge. He noted a clear chance similar to the move for Santoss second goal that went begging. Internal demands to improve finishing remain constant among players and the permanent staff.
He also acknowledged that Neymars individual brilliance proved the difference for the hosts.
The coach stressed that three major pillars have departed, Rayan, Vegetti and Coutinho, and that Vegetti and Rayan contributed more than 50% of last seasons goals. He believes recent arrivals can assume that responsibility, and that an initial win could unlock confidence.
Focus now shifts to the Campeonato Carioca, with Fluminense at the Maracana on Sunday 1 at 18:00 in the semi-final second leg. Having lost the first meeting, Vasco need a win to reach the state final. The board continue to seek a successor to Fernando Diniz while Lazaroni leads the group and targets a lift in morale, with a derby victory viewed as a possible spark for new signings still adapting to deliver what supporters and the SAF management expect.
