He joined Sunderland from Everton in January 2017, reuniting with David Moyes. He made 70 appearances across the Premier League, Championship and League One before returning to FC Copenhagen in the summer of 2019.

Oviedo had earlier spent almost five years at Everton after arriving from Copenhagen in 2012, playing 68 times. He scored a memorable winner against Manchester United at Old Trafford in December 2013.

After his second stint with Copenhagen, he moved to MLS with Real Salt Lake in 2022, featuring 56 times in all competitions before departing in 2024.

Internationally, he represented Costa Rica at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, having missed 2014 due to a serious leg injury.
