Emiliano Buendia, John McGinn and Youri Tielemans led Aston Villa to a 3-0 win over Freiburg in the Europa League final on Wednesday.
According to L'Équipe, Freiburg were overrun, particularly in defence, with right-back Lukas Kübler exposed and Philipp Treu booked in the fifth minute for fouling McGinn. Buendia was also cautioned for an elbow on 16 minutes.
Tielemans opened the scoring with a volley in the 41st minute after Morgan Rogers picked him out, with Kübler failing to engage. Matthias Ginter blocked an Ezri Konsa effort on 45+2, but moments later Buendia curled in from outside the box on 45+3, set up by McGinn as Vincenzo Grifo stood off.
Tielemans released Ollie Watkins on 54 minutes before Buendia danced past Kübler to cross for Rogers to make it 3-0 on 58, with Philipp Lienhart caught by the forward’s run. McGinn’s corner brought another chance on 69 minutes as Amadou Onana’s header hit the post, and Tielemans later picked out Buendia on 75.
Kübler’s ordeal summed up Freiburg’s full-back problems, with Treu also struggling after his early caution. Grifo offered little and was culpable on Villa’s second, Igor Matanovic was seldom found, while Ginter looked the most assured at the back.
