Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are among eight players leaving England’s camp before Tuesday’s friendly against Japan. England said in a statement the pair are heading back to Arsenal for medical assessment.

Both joined the squad on Friday and did not feature in the 1-1 draw with Uruguay that night.

Arsenal winger Noni Madueke and Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton also return to their clubs after knocks against Uruguay. Madueke started and was replaced by Jarrod Bowen in the 38th minute, Wharton came on at half-time.

Manchester City centre-back John Stones has left the camp after an issue in training before the game. He was an unused substitute against Uruguay.

The other departures are Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori and Newcastle United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. Calvert-Lewin made his first England appearance in nearly five years on Friday.

27 players remain from the 35-man squad named on 20 March, structured to assess a wider pool before this summer’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Fringe opportunities included a debut for Everton’s James Garner and a first cap in four years for Arsenal’s Ben White.

After facing Japan, England are scheduled to meet New Zealand and Costa Rica in June during a south Florida camp.
