Bukayo Saka converted a penalty to put England 5-3 up in the 2026 World Cup third-place play-off on Saturday, completing his hat-trick. L'Équipe notes that it checked France’s stirring revival.
France had trailed by four at half-time, then struck three in 18 minutes through a Kylian Mbappé brace and a Bradley Barcola finish to make it 3-4.
The spot-kick followed Malo Gusto’s tackle on Djed Spence, the Chelsea right-back bringing him down after being beaten inside the area. The foul was not in doubt.
Saka drove a low, angled shot across goal, with Mike Maignan diving the wrong way.
The winger’s penalty cooled French hopes and halted the comeback.
