Bayern Munich Drop Points

Bayern firstly took the lead halfway through the first half when Harry Kane’s cross/shot was picked up by Gnabry, and finally tapped home by 17-year-old Lennart Karl

The goal was the league leader’s 50th of the season, and in doing so, they became the quickest team to reach the margin, beating a record they set themselves back in 2019/20.

In truth, Bayern were wasteful with their chances and also came across goalkeeper Daniel Batz, who was in inspired form.

Mainz then hit back just seconds before halftime when Kacper Potulski headed home from a rare Mainz free kick into the Bayern box.

The trend of the second 45 minutes went the same as the first, with Bayern dominating the ball and looking for a way to break down the solid Mainz defence.

However, against the run of play, the 05ers took an unlikely lead when Stefan Bell’s looping pass was met by the head of Jae-Sung Lee, who made it 2-1.

Mainz continued to absorb the pressure that Bayern threw at them, with Nicolas Jackson firing an effort straight across the face of the goal, but the Rekordmeister’s blushes would be saved when Potuslki would pull on the shirt of Harry Kane, who went to ground, resulting in a penalty for Bayern. The Englishman would, of course, convert it to rescue a point for Vincent Kompany’s side.

For Mainz and the newly appointed head coach, Urs Fischer, the point will give them a massive confidence boost. Next week, the 05ers host follow relegation-threatened side, St. Pauli

For Bayern, despite dropping two points, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund themselves didn’t win.

TSG Hoffenheim Up to 5th

TSG Hoffenheim bounced back from their defeat at Dortmund last week as they convincing beat Hamburger SV 4-1 in Sinsheim.

The win moves Hoffenheim up to 5th and just three points off second spot.

That sentence is almost unbelievable considering where Hoffenheim were this time last season. Heading into the winter break 12 months ago, TSG were 14th, having played 14 matches and with 14 points. TSG eventually finished 15th, just above the relegation play-off spot.

However, this season looks like they’ll be pushing for some sort of European football, perhaps even the Champions League, by the way they’re playing.

The match was also a day of celebration for Croatian Andrej Kramaric. Some 11 months after going off on an unforgettable tirade against his Bundesliga club of over a decade, the striker was back feeling fully at home at TSG Hoffenheim. After being used off the bench in Hoffenheim’s last two league fixtures, Kramaric was gifted a chance to start at center forward on Saturday in commemoration of his 300th Bundesliga appearance for the Kraichgauer.

“I hope to enjoy football for many years to come,” Kramaric told Sky: “We’ll see how, where, and when, because there are some things we have to accept. I never dreamed that I would be here for ten years, that I would be a TSG legend or, as many say, a ‘TSG [Greatest of All Time] GOAT’. That’s something special to me.“

Scorpion Kick Helps Leverkusen in Derby

The first 45 minutes was a tense affair with a derby feel as both teams defended tightly, and both had their fair share of chances.

Robert Andrich had a great heading chance in the latter stage of the half, while Said El Mala’s run set up what seemed like an easy tap-in for Luca Waldschmidt, but the Köln forward would scuff his effort wide.

On the other side of the break, Malik Tillman had the perfect chance to open the scoring when the American dispossessed a Köln defender to leave him one-on-one with Marvin Schwäbe, but Tillman could only sky his effort.

Then, when it looked like the ball was not going to go in for either side, substitute Martin Terrier stepped up to open the scoring with a scorpion kick. Six minutes later, Robert Andrich would avenge his missed header in the first half as he headed the ball home to make it 2-0, and the second goal killed off any sort of momentum that Köln were looking to build.

Around The Grounds

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund were held to a 1-1 draw in Freiburg. BVB were 0-1 up when goalkeeper Gregor Kobel played a shocking pass into Jobe Bellingham, who was robbed of the ball and took his man out in the process. A red card followed, and then shortly after, Lucas Höler scored an amazing volley into the top corner. Freiburg thought they had won it late on, but the goal was chalked off by VAR due to the closest of offsides.

St. Pauli win their first Bundesliga game in 10 matches as they beat FC Heidenheim 2-1. The win comes at a crucial time and puts them just above Heidenheim in 16th. Martijin Kaars scored his first two goals of the season to help Pauli to the much-needed victory. The home side also had to play the whole of the second half with ten men. Eric Smith was given his marching orders on the stroke of halftime for committing a foul while being the last man. Replays showed that there was minimal contact, but the decision stood.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Union Berlin (3-1 vs RB Leipzig), Eintracht Frankfurt (1-0 vs FC Augsburg), VfB Stuttgart (0-4 vs Werder Bremen), and VfL Wolfsburg (1-3 vs Borussia Mönchengladbach).
