It has been recently reported that Xavi Simons still dreams of wearing the Barcelona shirt again, but the Dutch midfielder knows the chances of that happening this summer are slim.

The RB Leipzig star, who spent his early years at Barça’s famed La Masia academy, has informed the club that he would love to return. However, the financial reality facing Barcelona makes a deal almost impossible right now.

Leipzig value Simons at €75 million

A recent report from Diario SPORT has offered an update on Xavi Simons’ transfer saga, amid his desire to play for Barcelona.

The report suggests Simons is expected to leave Leipzig this summer after a season that didn’t quite meet expectations.

The Bundesliga side are open to selling the Dutch international, but only if a club meets their asking price: €75 million.

That figure immediately rules out Barcelona, who are still dealing with tight financial restrictions and cannot afford such a fee.

It’s not the first time Barça have tried to bring him back. Last summer, the club attempted to secure Simons on a loan deal, but Paris Saint-Germain, who held his rights at the time, were not interested in a temporary move.

They preferred a permanent sale, which led to Simons joining Leipzig. But despite the botched move, it appears Barça had kept tabs on the youngster’s performances in the Bundesliga, which haven’t been great so far.

With Barcelona out of the running, a move to the Premier League now seems the most realistic outcome. Both Chelsea and Manchester United have shown interest and could meet Leipzig’s valuation.

As for Barcelona, they are likely to move for other alternatives in the market.
