Burnley are targeting a defensive reinforcement ahead of their Championship return

Burnley are back in the Championship after another 19th place finish in the Premier League.

Nicky Hayen has been appointed by the Clarets to lead the club’s bid for promotion next season, with their sights set on an immediate return to the top flight.

The Lancashire outfit have gained promotion in two of the last four campaigns, but have been unable to cement themselves in the first division.

Hayen has arrived at Turf Moor following the exit of Scott Parker, who was dismissed following confirmation of the club’s relegation.

The 45-year-old has previously managed the likes of Genk and Club Brugge, but has never worked in English football before.

The Belgian coach will have until 1 September to shape the squad to his liking using the transfer market, with the window set to shut in six weeks.

It has been reported by West London Sport that Burnley are keen on Ronnie Edwards from QPR.

The 23-year-old has caught the attention of the Lancashire outfit, who are looking to bolster their backline this summer.

The centre-back initially joined QPR on loan in January 2025, but made his return on a permanent basis in January 2026 following a £4.5 million agreement with Southampton.

Edwards featured 17 times in the Championship last season, helping Julien Stéphan’s side finish 15th in the table.

He contributed one goal and one assist, but could now be sold just six months after his permanent arrival.

It remains to be seen whether QPR would be willing to cash in on the defender, or what kind of fee it will take to convince them to sell.

Edwards signed a long-term contract with the London outfit when he signed from the Saints earlier this year, which will give them a lot of leverage in any upcoming negotiations.

It’s believed that Hayen is keen to sign the 23-year-old as part of his plans to guide Burnley back to the Premier League, having sold Maxime Esteve recently to RB Leipzig for a fee in excess of £27 million.

The Clarets have already added Florentino Luis on a permanent basis this summer following his loan spell with the club last season.

But the Championship side have yet to make any further signings to the first team squad, with the new campaign set to get underway in just a few weeks.

QPR will surely hold firm on strong Ronnie Edwards asking price

If Burnley want to sign Edwards from QPR this summer, then they will likely have to pay an eight-figure sum to do so.

The London outfit have no immediate need to sell and his long-term contract means they can reasonably ask for much more than the £4.5 million they paid to sign him.

Edwards is a particularly important figure for Stéphan’s side, so it will have to be worth their while financially to consider a sale, especially to a Championship rival.

There is no doubt that the 23-year-old has the potential to succeed under Hayen, but it remains to be seen whether Burnley will be willing to pay more than £10 million for his signature.
