Burnley urged to beat Wolves to Kieran Trippier - 'he'll help us'

The player in question will be available this summer on a free transfer.

Burnley may have only been relegated a month ago, but given how their season has fizzled out, they have surely been planning for Championship life for some time.

The first few months of the campaign encouraged supporters, with victories over Sunderland, Wolves and Leeds United suggesting the Clarets had the quality to mount a strong Premier League survival bid, but they have since managed just one win in 28.

Scott Parker may not be Burnley's boss next season after he left Turf Moor by mutual consent, but the club have a host of talent who could excel in the second tier should they want to stay.

Kyle Walker is one of those players, but if he were to leave after just a year at the club, one of his former England colleagues could be lined up.

Should Burnley target Kieran Trippier transfer?

One player with a strong allegiance to Burnley is Kieran Trippier, who spent four years on loan at Turf Moor, including one on loan from Manchester City.

After a stellar spell with the Clarets, the right-back enjoyed a string of moves to Tottenham, Atlético Madrid and Newcastle United, where he will be leaving this summer on a free transfer.

Fellow relegated side Wolves are reportedly in talks with Trippier over a move to Molineux, although, unsurprisingly, they will face competition to secure his services.

When asked whether his team should be in the mix to sign the 35-year-old, FLW's Burnley pundit Josh Lucas suggested that Trippier's former teammate may need to make way.

"I think the big thing will be, it depends on Kyle Walker's stance," he told Football League World.

"There's no point having three, well, four right-backs as Oliver Sonne would be back, when two of them are Walker and Trippier. They're both in their mid-30s, that type of age coming to the end of their career.

"Trippier's always made it known he wants to come back to Burnley, but I think that was under Dyche rather than any other gaffer. It wasn't a thing of, 'well, I'll come back to Burnley no matter what,' I think it was a thing of, 'if Dyche's there I'll come back.'

Walker has a year left on his deal at Turf Moor, while he has spoken about his desire to return to Sheffield United, where he rose through the youth ranks.

Why Trippier could elevate Burnley in the Championship

Getting out of the Championship is no easy feat, but the Clarets have been masters of promotion in recent years, doing so twice in the last three campaigns.

This time round could be more challenging as one of Tottenham or West Ham will be joining them, as well as Wolves and a host of strong second-tier clubs.

Indeed, Burnley's trump card could be a player like Trippier, who possesses so many traits that Championship clubs would yearn for as they seek Premier League football.

"For me, I think we should be interested in his type of player, especially at his age," Josh continued.

"I feel like he'll help us. He knows that big game feel now he's played in the Champions League; I feel like bigger games in the Championship will help us out.

"As I say, depending on Kyle Walker's stance, we've got to do a lot better squad planning this year and plan for the Premier League as well, in the case that we do go straight back up, rather than build a Championship side that'll boss the Championship and then do nothing with it."

Not only does Trippier boast World Cup and Euros experience, but he has played Champions League football and has picked up a Spanish title and EFL Cup along the way.

He may not have enjoyed the same impact this season, but his attacking ability has still been on show, ranking in the top four per cent of Premier League right-backs for successful crosses, according to Futmob.

Beyond that, the defender's leadership has been immense in the North East, and he would certainly have the ability to rally the troops in key Championship moments.

We have seen older players make the step-down before, with Ashley Young helping Ipswich Town to promotion, so this could be a challenge that appeals to Trippier, with promotion very much the goal.
