The scenario: A year ago, Borussia Dortmund were seven points behind fourth place after 25 matchdays, but now they are eight points ahead of fifth place. FC Augsburg have been the fourth-best team since the winter break and go into matchday 26 in ninth place overall, seven points ahead of the relegation zone.
Home/away: BVB's run of 15 Bundesliga home games without defeat came to an end against Bayern Munich. Their previous home defeat came on matchday 25 of last season – 0-1 against FC Augsburg, who have collected only ten of their 31 points away from home this season. A total of eight away defeats is already one more than in the entire 2024/25 season.
Head-to-head: Although BVB have lost only five of their 29 encounters so far, Augsburg have almost always been a tough nut to crack. The Swabians have scored in nine of their last 18 Bundesliga matches against the Black & Yellows (four wins, five draws) but have conceded more goals against Borussia (74) than against Bayern in their Bundesliga history and have lost more often against no other opponent after taking a 1-0 lead (five times). On average, the Black and Yellows have scored almost three goals per home game against the Swabians (40 in 14 games).
Statistics: Borussia Dortmund and FC Augsburg have almost the same number of points in the second half of the season. BVB have collected just three more points (19) than Augsburg (16), who have already earned one more point than in the entire first half of the season (15). BVB scored the most goals from crosses (11), while Augsburg scored the second most (ten). Only Köln conceded more goals from set pieces (14) than Augsburg (13). Only FC Bayern Munich (19) has scored more than BVB's 17 goals from set pieces. Eleven of these 17 goals were scored in the second half of the season.
Last season: On a sunny and warm early spring day, 81,365 spectators at the sold-out SIGNAL IDUNA PARK saw BVB play too slowly and too statically for more than 75 minutes against an opponent who, although they did not do more than necessary, took the lead out of nowhere in the 23rd minute. Jeffrey Gouweleeuw scored with a header to make it 0-1 and that was enough for Augsburg to win the match.
The reverse fixture: One corner, two shots on goal, one goal. That was the story of a sloppy first half, but it was ultimately a successful one from Dortmund's point of view. Serhou Guirassy ended his goal drought and scored the first goal (37) after 438 minutes without a goal. In a frantic second half, in which Augsburg pushed for the equaliser, BVB held on to secure the victory.
