The BVB women’s opponents in the first round of the DFB-Pokal could hardly be more well known – Bayern Munich are by no means unfamiliar to BVB coach Markus Högner: he has faced the Munich side more than 20 times in his coaching career and has even trained some of the players in their star-studded squad himself. Now, he and the Black & Yellows are in the midst of preparations for the upcoming showpiece match, in which the Borussia women will place a special focus on defence. “The opponents provide a lot of information and more footage in advance. There are a few more video sessions that we, as the coaching team, are putting in,” said the BVB coach.
However, the intensive analysis of the opponents should not distract from the team’s own strengths. Against a dominant opponent, it will be unusual for the BVB women to have less possession. In return, BVB “will certainly be able to generate counter-attacking situations,” explains Markus Högner. This makes it all the more important to be willing to run, to be compact and to create chances when in possession. Apart from the two long-term injured players Melanie Schuster and Mia Scholle, the coach has a full and fit squad at his disposal.
At the season opener in August, the Black & Yellows already showed against Juventus that they can perform well against a top team. Markus Högner: “I think that’s ultimately the most important thing for us, that we give a good account of ourselves.” With a full stadium behind them, they can channel their mix of nervousness and anticipation into positive energy. Captain Paula Reimann is equally euphoric: “We will will everything to enjoy this historic game and maybe cause an upset” (more comments on the cup game).
Opponents Bayern Munich will also arrive full of confidence. As reigning double winners, they had their most successful season to date last year, winning the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga championship for the third time in a row. At the same time, they broke VfL Wolfsburg's run of ten consecutive cup wins and are entering the first round of the competition as defending champions for the first time since the 2011/12 season. The team, led by coach José Barcala, have started the current season in equally dominant fashion: after winning the Google Pixel Super Cup against VfL Wolfsburg, the Munich side are unbeaten in the league after four games and sit at the top of the table without conceding a goal.
The last tickets for the game are available in the online ticket shop, with up to 15,755 spectators able to attend All Black & Yellow fans who cannot be there in person can watch Borussia’s first meeting with FCB live on WDR and Sky on Monday evening.
