When the quarter-final draw paired Espérance Sportive de Tunis with Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League, there was certainly someone who cracked a hidden smile: Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane.
The Tunisian international (59 caps, 7 goals) is set to face his boyhood club for 180 minutes and perhaps even more. The return to the Hamadi Agrebi Stadium in Rades will be particularly meaningful for the golden child of the Blood and Gold, whose departure to Egypt left the fans with a sense of unfinished business.
The 26-year-old midfielder began his career at ES Tunis in 2018 and spent five years with the club, netting 34 goals and providing 6 assists in 143 appearances.
After two seasons in Hungary with Ferencváros, Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane opted for Egypt to continue his career. In 27 matches with the Egyptian side, he has scored 2 goals and delivered 4 assists.
Ben Romdhane never managed to win the African Champions League with ES Tunis, and he now hopes to lift the coveted trophy for the first time in his career with his Egyptian club.
