Cagliari put up a strong resistance to Inter Milan in the first half of yesterday’s Serie A clash, but eventually the Nerazzurri overhwelmed them.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
It was not a big surprise to see Inter and Cagliari go into halftime yesterday with the scoreline level.
The Nerazzurri always knew that the Rossoblu were going to be a tough opponent, particularly away from home.
As Inter coach Simone Inzaghi noted, Cagliari were unfortunate not to get anything from recent matches against Fiorentina, Atalanta, and Venezia.
And for much of the first half yesterday at the Unipol Domus, the Sardinians looked like a team who believed they could take a precious result.
Cagliari showed great defensive organization, as well as a threat on the counterattack.
Inter did not let themselves get too frustrated or demoralized, however.
In the second half, the Nerazzurri continued to be patient.
And eventually, that patience payed off.
Inter continued to probe for an opener, and found one through defender Alessandro Bastoni.
Then, a second goal courtesy of captain Lautaro Martinez soon followed.
Lastly, midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu wrapped up the victory with a third goal from the penalty spot.
The way that these goals came was no coincidence. Inter were able to calmly ratchet up the pressure.
There’s no doubt that in terms of technical quality, Inter enjoy a big advantage over Cagliari. In the first 45 minutes, however, they weren’t able to make that count.
In the second, though, Cagliari’s resistance broke down.
