The Cairo Derby once again delivered drama as Spanish referee Cesar Soto Grado became the centre of attention during Al Ahly’s clash with Zamalek on Monday night at Cairo International Stadium.

The Incident

In the 26 minute, Zamalek striker Oday Dabbagh went down after challenge with Al Ahly defender Yassin Marei.

Grado immediately pointed to the spot .. a decision fiercely contested by the Red Devils.

First Attempt Saved, Then Retaken

Abdallah El Said stepped up to take the penalty but Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy denied him with brilliant save.

Moments later, VAR intervened and the referee ordered retake amid loud protests from Ahly players.

Why Was It Retaken?

Replays showed multiple Ahly players including Yasser Ibrahim encroaching into the area before the kick was taken.

While El Shenawy remained on his line, the infringement was enough for the referee to apply the laws and call for retake.
