Two-time world champions and runners-up in the last edition, France have announced their squad for the FIFA World Cup on Thursday.
In what is expected to be his final tournament in charge, Didier Deschamps included a few surprise selections while leaving out several players who had featured throughout the qualifying cycle.
The biggest omission is Eduardo Camavinga of Real Madrid. After a disappointing campaign in Spain, the 23-year-old midfielder has lost his place in the national side and will miss a second consecutive World Cup.
Forward Randal Kolo Muani has also been left out. The Tottenham player, who featured at the World Cup in Qatar, failed to secure a spot in the final 26-man squad. In their place, Deschamps has called up Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Deschamps also confirmed a new face among the goalkeepers, with Ligue 1’s best goalkeeper award winner Robin Risser selected ahead of Lucas Chevalier for his first World Cup appearance.
France begin their campaign on 16 June against Senegal national football team before facing Iraq national football team and Norway national football team in Group I.
