Cambiaso: ‘Italy had good Nations League campaign’

Andrea Cambiaso believes Italy had done enough to get top spot in the Nations League against France and they must ‘continue along this path.’

It was another nightmare start against Les Bleus, conceding within 119 seconds at San Siro thanks to Adrien Rabiot’s header from a corner.

Lucas Digne’s free kick ricocheted in off first the crossbar and then Guglielmo Vicario’s back, but Cambiaso’s strike was followed by another Rabiot header for the 3-1 result.

This means the last six goals conceded by Italy were all from dead ball situations and it is something Luciano Spalletti must work on going forward.

“Apart from the free kick, France hardly created anything in the second half, whereas we created numerous chances and in stoppages Maignan made a great save on Moise Kean. I thought we played well overall,” Cambiaso told RAI Sport.

Considering how badly Italy had done at EURO 2024 and that they were drawn in the Group of Death alongside France, Belgium and Israel, it was impressive that the Azzurri managed to secure quarter-final qualification with a game to spare.

They won every match in the group except for the 2-2 draw against Belgium when down to 10 men and this 3-1 defeat at San Siro this evening.

“After the Euros, we recovered well, played some good games, we are a young squad and need to continue along this path,” insisted Cambiaso.

The quarter-finals will be played in March for access to the Nations League Final Four in the summer of 2025.
