Jaminton Campaz has gone from an underwhelming spell at Grêmio to a place in Colombia’s World Cup squad, and he is likely to start on the bench for their opener. The 26-year-old’s resurgence has come after a productive move to Rosario Central.
According to Globo.com, Campaz is in line to make his World Cup debut after a turnaround that followed his time in Brazil. He joined Grêmio from Tolima in August 2021 for a club-record R$ 21 million, taking the storied number seven shirt during a relegation fight.
That first season brought 18 appearances and two goals, and Grêmio were relegated. In 2022 he helped the Porto Alegre side win promotion, playing 40 games with five goals and four assists, then left on loan to Rosario Central in early 2023.
In Argentina he thrived, delivering 43 games, 10 goals and eight assists, and lifting the Copa de la Liga. Rosario Central made the move permanent in January 2024, then last year won the Argentine Championship, where he lined up alongside Di María.
Internationally, Campaz was in Colombia’s 2021 Copa América squad under Reinaldo Rueda, missed the 2024 tournament and the nation did not play at the 2022 World Cup. Strong club form earned him recalls under Néstor Lorenzo, and he scored in a March friendly against France. His place at the finals was confirmed on 25 May when Lorenzo named his squad.
Colombia face Uzbekistan on Wednesday at 23:00 Brasília time at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico in Group K, with Campaz likely among the substitutes. They then meet Congo on the 23rd before finishing the group against Portugal.
