Senegal's victory over Morocco in the CAN 2025 final did little to quell the underlying tensions. On the contrary, the Lions of Teranga's triumph was shrouded by a lingering climate of suspicion, fueled by refereeing controversies throughout the tournament and a chaotic end to the match, notably marked by the temporary walk-off of Senegalese players after a penalty was awarded to Morocco.
Beyond the officiating, discomfort shifted to the pre-match atmosphere. In the mixed zone, Ismaïl Jakobs made some heavily loaded remarks, implying that the final was played out in a troubled context long before the opening whistle.
"A lot happened before the match. I think a lot will come out afterwards... It wasn’t just this situation. Plenty of things happened before the game as well. But you will find out. Many things happened to Krépin, Ousseynou and Pape Matar Sarr at halftime," he stated, without elaborating further.
His words echoed the successive withdrawals of Krépin Diatta and Ousseynou Niang, as well as the discomfort suffered by Pape Matar Sarr during the match. No formal accusations have been made, but these insinuations sustain an unsettling ambiguity around an already historic final, casting a shadow that extends well beyond the sporting arena.
