Fresh from his masterclass against Spain, Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, 40, has become one of the faces of the nation’s World Cup run.
According to L'Équipe, he was born during the 1986 World Cup, ultimately won by the Albiceleste.
His father wanted to name him Valdano, in tribute to Diego Maradona’s team-mate, but Cape Verde’s civil registry then barred foreign given names.
The family chose the Portuguese name Josimar instead, after the Brazilian full-back who stood out at Mexico 1986.
Vozinha, meaning granny, is a childhood nickname, given because he would go to his grandparents to complain after a bad game.
