Former Sunderland midfielder Carl Robinson is in contention for the St Mirren vacancy, with the 49-year-old among the favourites to take the job, Scottish Sun reports.

Robinson made 57 appearances for the Black Cats between 2004 and 2006 and won 52 caps for Wales. He left Western Sydney Wanderers in 2022 and is currently assistant coach at MLS side Atlanta United, while also working in coach education for the Welsh FA. He is keen to return to management.

St Mirren turned to new options after Stephen Robinson departed for Aberdeen earlier this month. It has been a difficult league campaign, with the Buddies 10th on 24 points from 30 games. Livingston sit bottom on 15 points with one win, so relegation looks highly unlikely.

They also lifted the Scottish League Cup for only the second time in their history this season, beating Celtic 3-1 at Hampden Park in December. Other candidates linked with the role include Neil Lennon, Simo Valakari, Gary Naismith, Mark Wilson and former Dundee coach Tony Docherty.

Before the Premiership split, St Mirren visit Falkirk, then host Aberdeen and travel to Celtic. They also face Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final on 18th April. If appointed in time, Robinson could have the chance to oversee that run.
