World Cup winning former Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, aged 83, is in intensive care in Rio de Janeiro and in a stable condition on Sunday after surgery for complications from lung inflammation, the Samaritano Barra hospital said.
He underwent cauterisation of a nasal bleed on Saturday, a procedure described as successful.
Parreira remains sedated and on artificial respiration.
He has been treated for Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system, since 2023.
He holds the record for World Cup appearances as a head coach, leading Brazil in 1994 and 2006, Kuwait in 1982, the United Arab Emirates in 1990, Saudi Arabia in 1998 and South Africa in 2010.
In 1994, his Brazil side triumphed in the United States with Romario and Bebeto up front. That win ended a 24-year wait and secured the Seleçao’s fourth of their five world titles.
