The goalkeeper Carlos Miguel was indirectly responsible for the farewell of two historic goalkeepers from Palmeiras and Corinthians. During his time at Timão, Cássio left the club. In the current season, defending the colors of Verdão, the goalkeeper saw his competitor Weverton bid farewell to the alviverde club and move to Grêmio.

Passing the baton at Corinthians

Carlos Miguel joined Corinthians in 2021 after terminating his contract with Internacional. The goalkeeper, who was signed to be the immediate backup for the idol Cássio Ramos, was contracted with a deal until 2023 and later renewed with the alvinegro club until the end of 2025.

After three years as a backup, Carlos Miguel finally had the opportunity to be the starting goalkeeper for Timão between April and May 2024. The decision to bench Cássio and give the young goalkeeper a chance came from the Portuguese coach António Oliveira, who recognized the idol's poor form. The number 12 had been struggling with mental health issues.

Upon taking over as the starting goalkeeper for Corinthians, Carlos Miguel did not relinquish the position. The goalkeeper accumulated a streak of 11 matches and definitively displaced Cássio. In May, the idol left Corinthians after 12 years and stated that the cycle had come to an end. In his farewell press conference, he made it clear that the decision was not related to his status as a backup.

After building a successful history at Corinthians, Cássio signed with Cruzeiro, a club he has been defending since then. Shortly after the departure of the experienced player, Carlos Miguel, who was responsible for replacing the idol, left the club and transferred to Nottingham Forest in England.

Starting role at Palmeiras

A very similar scenario occurred with Carlos Miguel and Weverton at Palmeiras. The 27-year-old goalkeeper had not been getting opportunities in England, and Palmeiras, noticing the need for a direct competitor for the 38-year-old athlete, seized the opportunity and signed him in August this year. He signed a contract with Verdão until the end of 2030.

The difference is that, at Palmeiras, Abel Ferreira did not bench Weverton by choice. The number 21 suffered a fracture in a bone in his right hand and was sidelined in the final stretch of last season. The coach, therefore, placed his trust in Carlos Miguel, who performed well in the Palmeiras goal. The number 1 took over the position permanently and was even the starter in the Libertadores final.

In the current season, Weverton recovered from the injury, but it was Carlos Miguel who started the year as the starter, playing in the two Paulista matches. Amidst this scenario, the experienced goalkeeper received an irresistible offer from Grêmio, according to president Leila Pereira. The club wanted to renew with the 'Wall' for another year but agreed to release him to the Tricolor gaúcho without financial compensation.

Now, Carlos Miguel is the number 1 in the Palmeiras goal. He has already played 14 matches for Verdão, with nine clean sheets. Marcelo Lomba is second in the hierarchy, while the young Aranha is the third option.

Similar speeches

Upon leaving Corinthians, Cássio made it clear that he did not leave the club because he was 'demoted' to a backup position. The same speech was adopted by Weverton last Wednesday when he was honored by Palmeiras before the classic against Santos.

"Sometimes, people think that Weverton wouldn't want to stay on the bench, but I think that has nothing to do with it. It has everything to do with knowing your time. I understood, as Palmeiras understood, that this was the time. The story is written, and it was written loyally, with a lot of struggle and sacrifice," said the goalkeeper to Cazé TV.
