Carragher compares Arsenal ‘all-rounder’ to Roy Keane | OneFootball

Jamie Carragher has praised Declan Rice as a ‘a wonderful midfield player’ and believes the Arsenal midfielder has similarities tor Roy Keane.

Rice impressed as Arsenal thrashed Manchester City 5-1 in the Premier League on Sunday. The 26-year-old was at the heart of an impressive Arsenal performance and set up goals for Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri. Those assists saw Rice move to five in the Premier League this season.

Carragher has criticised those who judge Rice via his goal contributions, however, and insists his impact is far greater than goals and assists.

He called Rice a ‘throwback’ who ‘can do anything’ and believes his game is comparable to former Manchester United captain Keane.

The latter won seven league titles at Manchester United and is widely recognised as one of the best box-to-box midfielders of the Premier League era.

“I almost feel I’m one of Declan Rice’s biggest supporters. I find myself scratching my head when I see people criticise him and ask for goals and assists,” he said to Sky Sports.

“I know in recent years we look at numbers, at Arsenal, Vieira and Petit were two of the best midfielders we’ve seen in the Premier League. Nobody talked about how many goals or assists they got.

“Rice is one of those, an all-round midfielder – a bit like Roy Keane. He’s almost a throwback to a midfielder in a 4-4-2 who can do anything. His power, his pressing, he’s a wonderful midfield player.”
