Caspar Jander shone for Southampton despite a 2-1 FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester City at Wembley, leaving the German wanting more as attention turns back to promotion. According to Sainstmarching.com, even Pep Guardiola highlighted the Championship side's performance.
Jander slotted into Tonda Eckert's XI for the suspended Flynn Downes and was central to Finn Azaz's opener, winning the ball before the Irishman curled beyond James Trafford. After Azaz’s strike, Nico Gonzalez hit in the 87th minute to make it 2-1.
Energetic and composed, Jander won eight ground duels and completed 89% of his passes, rarely looking overawed by the stage. The display did not bring the upset he craved.
Eckert praised the ex-Nürnberg battler afterwards and suggested he is peaking at the right time for Southampton. With Ipswich Town visiting on Tuesday, Saints need a win to keep automatic promotion hopes alive.
Reflecting on Wembley, Jander said: "I think the right mindset is that we can take pride out of this game and be ready for the next two games." He added: "We need to take six points and see how we get on [in the automatic promotion race.]"
