El Periódico Mediterráneo reports that Castellón end matchday 36 in LaLiga Hypermotion in the play-off places, three points off automatic promotion, after a contentious finale at Riazor where Deportivo beat Mirandés 3-1 and Almería’s brief return to second was overturned.
Carlos Fernández put Mirandés ahead from the spot late in the first half, in an incident that warranted a red card for the home goalkeeper, who was only cautioned. Minutes earlier Mirandés had appealed for a handball penalty.
After the break, Mario Soriano levelled on 51 minutes and Yeremay Hernández made it 2-1 on 58, the second coming from another penalty that sparked further anger. Bil Nsongo sealed it, then in stoppage time a third penalty of the night saw Javi Hernández denied by Álvaro Fernández.
On Sunday, Almería reclaimed an automatic berth by beating Málaga 3-2 thanks to a stoppage-time header from Brazilian Leo Baptistao. Málaga, Castellón’s next opponents, had recovered from 2-0 down in the second half. Almería then slipped back behind Deportivo on Monday night as the Galicians won, while Mirandés needed victory to keep survival hopes alive.
Eibar’s 2-1 win over Huesca extended the division’s best second-half-of-the-season run and moved them to within two points of the play-offs, with Huesca still in the drop zone. Castellón face Huesca at El Alcoraz in the penultimate round, then Eibar at SkyFi Castalia on the final day. Next up is Málaga v Castellón on Saturday at 21.00, plus Burgos v Deportivo and Granada v Almería.
