He scored his first Bundesliga goal against FC Bayern of all teams – but the celebration was surprisingly reserved. Now Gladbach talent Wael Mohya explains the background
Wael Mohya is one of the most exciting young players in the Bundesliga. The Borussia Mönchengladbach attacker made headlines back in December 2025 when he made his debut at the age of just 16 years, 11 months and 13 days, becoming the youngest Bundesliga player in the club’s history
Since then, further appearances have followed – and finally his first goal in the top flight at the beginning of March. The 17-year-old scored for the first time in the Bundesliga in a 4-1 defeat against FC Bayern
But while many young players would celebrate such a moment with exuberance, Mohya’s jubilation remained conspicuously reserved – a decision that did not go down well with all fans
In an interview with kicker, the U18 international explained his motives: „Some fans even reproached me for not pulling a big stunt. Of course, with the score as it was, it wasn’t appropriate to celebrate in a big way.“
Nevertheless, the moment was something very special for him: „But inside, the joy was huge. A goal against Bayern, you could choose a worse moment.“
