CBF releases VAR audio on Gabigol’s red card in Santos v Vitória | OneFootball

The federation released the VAR audio from the incident that led to Gabigol’s dismissal in the 3-1 win over Vitória, played on Saturday in the 18th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.

After netting his side’s third, the forward made an obscene gesture towards a supporter who had been criticising him. Following a review, he was sent off.

In the exchange between video assistant Wagner Reway and on-field referee Rafael Rodrigo Klein, the VAR team initially thought Gabigol would be substituted and asked for that to be halted. Reway then noted the player had grabbed his private parts and gestured towards someone, and recommended a red card.

After checking the pitchside monitor, Klein said the gesture was clear and decided to show a red card.

Post-match, head coach Cuca said that in the dressing room Gabigol accepted he was wrong for making the gesture and apologised to the squad.

The dismissal rules him out of the match against Botafogo on 22 July, when the Brasileirão is due to resume after the World Cup.
