The CBF will run another semi-automatic offside test across three fixtures in round 19 of the Brasileirão on Friday. According to Globo.com, the trials will be offline and will not affect on-field decisions.
The system will be trialled at Fluminense v Bragantino at the Maracanã, Bahia v Chapecoense at the Arena Fonte Nova, and Mirassol v Grêmio at the Maião.
Decisions will remain with the existing VAR used in Série A. The SAOT supports VAR by using cameras to track players and the ball, identifying the pass instant and positions within seconds, as seen at the World Cup.
CBF has targeted a round-20 debut and is conducting tests beforehand. In this phase, access is limited to a pre-selected refereeing working group.
For Fluminense v Bragantino, no operators will work the system inside the Maracanã VAR room. Equipment will capture images in the stadium while monitoring takes place at the CBF’s annex in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro.
Implementation requires more than installing cameras, since SAOT must integrate with VAR and pass connectivity checks. Trials will also run in under-17 and under-20 matches before any full rollout.
Conditions such as strong winds and sun position can affect performance. Once each Série A venue’s specifics are aligned, the tool is set to be integrated with VAR.
