DR Congo’s federation announced this week its FIFA World Cup squad, which includes CD Castellón’s Brian Cipenga. With Awer Mabil, a 2022 World Cup player, awaiting Australia’s final call, Cipenga could become the first to appear at a World Cup while on Castellón’s books.
Cipenga’s contract runs to 30 June, so he will remain a Castellón player for the opening games regardless of his next move. His call-up means he cannot help in any potential play-off. The club are working to delay his reporting date so he can play the final match against Eibar.
Castellón’s World Cup lineage is long. José Araquistain was in Spain’s 1962 squad, as was Enrique Saura in 1982. Miguel Ángel González went in 1978 and 1982, Robert Fernández and Fernando Gómez Colomer were at Italia 90, and Igor Dobrovolski featured there too.
Into the new century, Gaizka Mendieta went to 2002 with Spain. Rene Krhin played for Slovenia in 2010 and Haris Medunjanin for Bosnia in 2014. Current back-up goalkeeper Amir Abedzadeh made Iran’s squads in 2018 and 2022.
This summer Gervane Kastaneer is in Curaçao’s final list for a World Cup in Mexico, the United States and Canada from 11 June to 19 July. Former midfielder Álvaro Fidalgo is in Mexico’s provisional list.
On the touchline, Vicente del Bosque, a former Castellón player, later led Spain at the 2010 and 2014 finals. Paco Gento, Alfredo di Stéfano, Lucien Muller and Ramón María Calderé played at World Cups before coaching Castellón, Muller with France and the others with Spain.
