Parkhead chiefs have opened fresh dialogue with Boca Juniors, reveals Josh McCafferty. The mission? Securing Marcelo Saracchi on a long-term basis. The Uruguayan full-back spent last term on loan in Glasgow, putting in a solid shift before a hamstring injury temporarily halted his momentum. He featured 27 times, bagging a solitary goal and two assists during his stay.
Celtic‘s initial preference was simple. Another temporary arrangement. Just roll the loan over for another season. But the player put his foot down. Saracchi wants stability at this crossroads in his career, completely blocking another stopgap option. No more packing bags.
Consequently, the ball is firmly in Celtic’s court. Argentine parent club Boca Juniors won’t play ball on another loan either, demanding a flat €1.5m fee to sanction a permanent departure. The hierarchy must now decide whether to pay up or walk away from the table.

Coughing up the €1.5m valuation represents remarkably smart business. Absolute no-brainer. Left-back remains a glaring area of concern for manager Martin O’Neill, who desperately needs reliable cover and genuine competition on that flank. Kieran Tierney cannot carry the burden alone. Fortunately, the Uruguayan international already proved he fits the tactical setup properly during the recent double-winning campaign.
Look at his pedigree. The 28-year-old boasts significant experience across top-tier competitions, including 27 matches for Galatasaray in the Turkish Süper Lig and domestic fixtures for Boca. Crucially, securing him early prevents a frantic, unpredictable scramble later in the summer transfer window. We all know how those panicky deadline-day deals usually pan out.
The board must avoid haggling over minor financial discrepancies for crucial squad components. It’s frustrating. The defender provides natural balance, possesses excellent recovery pace, and displays sharp cross-field vision. Missing out on a settled player over a relatively low fee creates completely unnecessary friction for a squad preparing for elite European nights. His development years at River Plate and RB Leipzig show he doesn’t shrink under immense pressure. Parkhead decision-makers should just write the cheque and settle the defensive line immediately.
