Celtic are reportedly ready to pursue a deal for Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone

Celtic are considering an approach for Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in the final days of the transfer window.

According to the Daily Mail, the Glasgow giants are looking to reinforce their options between the sticks before the market closes on Tuesday.

Both Jose Sa and Dan Bentley have started for Cesar Peixoto’s side in their opening two league games so far.

Johnstone’s last appearance for the Old Gold came in the FA Cup fifth round defeat to Liverpool last March.

He made 12 appearances in the Premier League, but fell down the pecking order before undergoing shoulder surgery near the end of the campaign.

But the 33-year-old is now back to full fitness, and remains out of the team following the arrival of Peixoto as head coach.

Celtic are looking to bolster their goalkeeper options following their humiliating elimination from the Champions League.

And it’s understood that Johnstone has emerged as a candidate for the Premiership side, with the transfer deadline fast approaching.

It’s believed that Wolves would be open to his departure, with the former West Brom shot stopper not currently in Peixoto’s first team plans, even with Bentley’s recent departure to Coventry City.

The club have agreed a deal to sign Joao Virginia from Sporting Clube de Portugal, with John Ruddy also in talks to return to Molineux.

This would open the door for Johnstone’s exit from the club, and Celtic are ready to potentially pounce.

The goalkeeper signed for Wolves in the 2024 summer transfer window, and he has made a total of 19 league appearances for the Midlands outfit.

However, relegation to the Championship has cast doubt over his future at Molineux, with his contract not set to expire until June 2028.

How Wolves fans feel about Sam Johnstone’s future

Wolves have been told that they need a good number two, with confidence in Sa’s ability quite low at the moment.

The Old Gold have been told that Nick Pope could be an option worth pursuing in the final days of the window, although that appears unlikely at this stage.

And some fans are happy to see Ruddy come back into the fold after he previously held the role of number two for a few seasons in the Premier League.

Ultimately, a lot of supporters are happy at the prospect of Johnstone leaving.

Wolves have until 1 September to complete their remaining business before the market shuts.

Sam Johnstone departure suits all parties

Celtic are in need of reinforcements in the goalkeeper department, and Johnstone should be available at a reasonably affordable price.

And the 33-year-old could use a fresh start somewhere else if he is otherwise going to end up third or fourth choice under Peixoto.

So this has the makings of a deal that should suit all parties, if it does go through, as it will offer Wolves a small fee for his exit, and open up space for their other signings.

It will also give Johnstone a greater chance at game time under Martin O’Neill, and the opportunity to compete for major silverware in Scotland.
