Selling Johnston at £14 million feels surprisingly modest. Celtic would make a healthy profit after paying around £3 million, though replacing a player of his quality could swallow almost every penny of that return.

His 2025/26 Scottish Premiership campaign was interrupted by a recurring hamstring problem. That limited him to seven league appearances, during which he produced one assist and recorded an impressive average match rating of 7.54. Those numbers don’t reflect his true level because fitness returned at exactly the right time for Canada’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

He played every minute of Canada’s five matches as they reached the Round of 16. That run reminded plenty of clubs why Johnston attracts Premier League attention. He defends aggressively, reads danger early and delivers quality crosses without sacrificing discipline.

Chris Sutton has already questioned whether Celtic can afford to lose such an influential defender. It’s a fair point. Experienced full-backs with leadership qualities rarely come cheaply, especially those entering their prime years.
