Arne Engels is increasingly likely to leave Celtic this summer, with multiple reports now framing his departure not as a possibility but as a growing probability, and a list of suitors that stretches from the Premier League to the Bundesliga and Serie A.
As reported by 67 Hail Hail, the mood around Engels’ future has shifted meaningfully since January, when Celtic held firm against serious interest and rejected what the BBC reported as three bids from Nottingham Forest – the highest of which reached £25 million. The stance then was categorical: no sale mid-season. The stance now appears rather more open to negotiation.
Engels arrived last summer for around £11 million, so a summer exit at a significantly higher valuation would represent exactly the kind of transaction Celtic’s model is built around. He’s under contract until 2028, which means the club control the timeline and hold the leverage on fee. This isn’t a player running down his deal and walking – any sale happens on Celtic’s terms.
The suitor list, according to multiple reports, now includes Atalanta, Lazio, RB Leipzig, and renewed interest from Forest. That’s genuine competition across top European leagues, which does Celtic’s negotiating position no harm at all. There is also a signal from the player’s side worth noting: reports indicate Engels has joined a new agency, a move that is rarely coincidental when transfer windows are approaching.
Former Celtic winger Aiden McGeady has publicly argued the club should consider selling if a figure around €30 million arrives, and let’s be honest – it’s hard to dispute that logic given where Engels was signed from and what he cost. The arithmetic works. The harder conversation is about what comes in to replace him, and how quickly.
Celtic have already been linked with Ivan Basic as a potential midfield option, and the club’s reported contingency planning around Engels’ position suggests the recruitment department is not caught sleeping here. Whether a like-for-like quality replacement can be secured before the summer window closes is a different matter, and one that directly intersects with the UCL qualifier concerns that make early recruitment so critical.
Watch the incoming business closely. If Celtic move for a central midfielder before the window properly opens, that will tell you everything about what they expect to happen with Engels. The decision appears to be moving toward a sale – on our terms, at our price, and on our timetable.
